All of the pages are narrated by Liz (me) and the narration will vary in size—when I have more pictures, there'll be less text (in theory). Most photos will have text if you place the cursor over the image. If you click the smaller images, a larger version will open in a new window.

The collection on this site is only part of the hundreds of photos we took in Ireland. If you want to see all of them, you need to stop by.

Day 2

Kilkenny. You Bastards!

Our first full day in Ireland and we would be driving about an hour down to Kilkenny. Josh drove and the rest of us slept. First we wandered Kilkenny just seeing what was around and deciding what we wanted to see first.

A shot of Kilkenny.     Can you find the sign for beer?     This is where we parked. Somewhere...     I'm pretty sure that there is a pub in this shot.

A backalley B&B.     I know this is in Kilkenny, but I have no clue where...     Men at Work

We didn't wander too long, deciding to go to Kilkenny Castle, once home of the Butler family. I think Josh was dissapointed with Kilkenny Castle because it was very Victorian. I was just disappointed they wouldn't let us take pictures inside. One woman did take a picture. Unfortunately, they didn't confiscate the film or camera or anything. I had hoped.

The gate to Kilkenny Castle.     The, uh, castle.     Looking into the courtyard.     Part of the castle from the courtyard.

Hi Wolfgang!     A gutter from 1682. See, it's educational!     Yup. The castle's still there.     The only shot I got within the castle. I took this before we were told the no photo rule.

Part of the castle grounds had a path. This is walking up to it.     This is the top of the path looking out into Kilkenny.     Look it's Kilkenny. You bastards!

With the Castle tour done, it was time for lunch. Now I had gotten sick that morning and was heavily medicated. I was in no way hungry, and if I were, I was starting to tire of pubs. The four of us found this great sandwhich and salad shop. I had three absolutely yummy salads and brown bread, which was more than enough food.

mmmmmm....

And Josh had a sandwhich and a slice of pie.

Yup, it's a slice of pie.

After lunch it was off to the design center to look at the shops.

Design Center.

Then off to the Black Abbey, which was an abbey of Dominican Friars. I felt very sacrilegious taking photos inside. But god did punish me. Most of my interior shots did not come out well.

Part of the alley we walked to get to the abbey. The abbey is at our backs.     The Black Abbey     Resting before we enter the sactuary.     This statue of Jesus looked just like Buddy Jesus to me. Yes I am going to Hell. You?

The candles and pews.     An absolutely stunning window.     I beleive this sarcophagus was left open for me.     A cat hanging out on someone's car outside the Abbey.

Dunmore Cave

Our day in Kilkenny done, we started the drive back to Birr. On the way, we stopped at Dunmore Cave just outside of Kilkenny. I thought this was the best spot of the day, due in part to our tour guide who was funny, informative, and relatively easy to understand. I'm not sure if all of these photos have the correct side up.

Desending into Dunmore Cave.     Old fears among locals held that this was the mouth of a large beast. Many were afraid to enter the caves.     Vegetation next to the opening.     The slightly-blurry insides of the cave.

I believe the white area in the center is refered to as the Buffalo.     More cave guts     We are getting close the mouth.     The mouth of the cave. Can you see the rocks resembling teeth?

Once back in Birr, we looked again for food. It took some time but we settled on Chinese. Now, I've come to assume that when you order Chinese food it comes with rice of some kind. This restaurant gave you the option of white rice or fries with your meal.

Towards the end of dinner, the power went out on the entire block. But we survived and all was well. We ended the night hanging out at Anja and Wolfgang's B&B and then saying our goodbyes. The next day, both couples would be going their separate ways.
