All of the pages are narrated by Liz (me) and the narration will vary in size—when I have more pictures, there'll be less text (in theory). Most photos will have text if you place the cursor over the image.

The collection on this site is only part of the hundreds of photos we took in Ireland. If you want to see all of them, you need to stop by.

Day 1

We made it!

After catching about 2 hours of sleep on the plane, we landed and picked up our red Nissan Alero. The hubcap was like that when we got it, I swear!

The little Nissan Alero that could

Josh drove on the first day while I chanted "left side, left side, left side" periodically during the first hour. I have to say, he picked up left side of the road driving pretty quickly. Many of the Irish roads are narrow. Narrow as in I-don't-know-how-you-can-fit-two-cars-on-this-road-and-there-isn't-even-a-shoulder-thanks-to-that-lovely-stone-wall narrow.

We drove from Shannon down to Limerick in search of breakfast to no avail. So we continued northwest toward Birr. On the way, we found a pub that served breakfast. I had the vegetarian breakfast with scrambled eggs, mushrooms, tomato, toast, and potatoes. Josh had an egg sandwich. Mine was better. And then we headed to Birr and Kinnitty.

Kinnitty Castle and Birr

In Kinnitty we found our hotel, and checked in early. The employees of Kinnitty Castle let us check in four hours early earning them sainthood. After a couple hours of sleep, Josh and I went out and wandered the castle. I, of course, took a lot of pictures.

The drive up to Kinnity Castle.     This is the first look of the castle after driving up the wooded drive/road.     The side of the Castle.     The entrance to our first lodgings in Ireland.

The view from the front door     The stables.     I believe this part is the old walls of the Abby.     The old walls connected to the newer castle.

The courtyard.     A banquet room.     The hallway to our room     Kinnity Castle from a distance.

Welcome to our bathroom.     The throne.     The sink.     The bathtub.     This is looking into the mirrored wall adjacent to the tub. If you look closely, you can see the full toilet throne.

We returned to our room and shortly after, Anja called! She and Wolfgang were downstairs in the lobby. It was out to dinner and wander Birr. Dinner was a difficult task as it took some time to find a place we could all agree upon and a place we could find. Eventually, we found a nice pub in the middle of town and had dinner. I had the green curry chicken and Josh had a hamburger. No Guiness yet.

Wandering Birr and the world of tomorrow

Birr Castle on the edge of town     Zoom to the castle     Yup, searching for food.     Still looking for food.

The town of Birr     Back to the town center. Look at the cars!     A monument to something in the center of town.     Because I'm a sucker for a closeup shot.

After dinner the four of us went walking in a park at sunset. The foam on the small waterfall looked strangely like Guiness.

Sunrise, sunset. Sunrise, sunset.     Just some random church.     You can't tell from this picture, but the foam was a brown color. It looked like Guiness.     Just some random people fishing in the park.

After walking through the town and a park, the four of us went back to Anja and Wolfgang's B&B to plan Tuesday's outings. Okay, Josh and Anja planned where we would go.
